These terms govern your use of the Roommates app. By creating an account or joining a house, you agree to them.
Be 13 or older, keep your account secure, don't misuse the app, and remember that Roommates tracks shared costs but never moves money. Everything below says the same thing with more precision.
You must be at least 13 years old to use Roommates. If you're under the age of majority where you live, you may only use it with a parent or guardian's permission.
You're responsible for what happens under your account, so keep your sign-in secure. Invite links and codes let people request to join your house — a member still has to approve them — but only share a code with people you actually want in your household.
You keep ownership of the chores, lists, expenses, events, and notes you create. By adding them, you grant us the limited permission needed to store that content and display it to the members of your house, which is what makes the shared features work. We claim no other rights to it.
Don't post content that is unlawful, infringes someone else's rights, or is intended to harass another member of your house.
If you're a California resident under 18, you may ask us to remove content you posted. Write to roommatesappios@gmail.com and we'll remove it. Note that removal may not be complete or comprehensive — for example, a roommate may have already acted on an expense you entered, and that record stays with the house.
Roommates helps you track shared costs and who owes whom. It can hand off to a payment app such as Venmo, PayPal, or Cash App to make settling up easier.
Roommates does not move money, hold funds, or act as a payment processor, money transmitter, or escrow service. Any actual payment happens in that other app, directly between you and your roommates, under that app's own terms. The balances Roommates shows are a convenience and not a financial statement — settling up is between you and the people you live with.
Don't attempt to break the app's security or reach data belonging to houses you're not a member of, don't scrape or automate access to it, and don't use it to harass anyone.
Roommates is provided "as is" and "as available." We work to keep it running and accurate, but we don't guarantee it will always be available, error-free, or that data — including expense balances and notification delivery — will never be affected by a bug or a service outage.
If you believe something in a house you're a member of infringes your copyright, write to roommatesappios@gmail.com with: your contact details, a description of the work you say was infringed, where the material is in the app, a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn't authorised, a statement under penalty of perjury that your notice is accurate and you're authorised to act, and your signature. We respond to valid notices under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and we may end the accounts of repeat infringers.
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ROOMMATES IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT ANY BALANCE, REMINDER, OR NOTIFICATION WILL BE ACCURATE OR DELIVERED ON TIME.
Some places don't allow these exclusions, so parts of this may not apply to you.
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ROOMMATES AND ITS MAKERS ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOST PROFITS, LOST DATA, OR LOSS OF GOODWILL, arising out of or relating to your use of the app — including any dispute between roommates over chores, money, or shared content, and including any payment you make in another app after using Roommates to work out who owes what.
OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE APP IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (a) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR (b) TWENTY-FIVE US DOLLARS.
These limits apply even if a remedy fails its essential purpose. Some places don't allow them, so parts may not apply to you.
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Roommates and its makers from any claim, damage, or cost (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of content you contribute, your misuse of the app, your violation of these terms, or your violation of anyone else's rights.
These terms are between you and us — not Apple. Apple is not responsible for Roommates or its contents. Specifically:
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. You and we agree that any dispute arising out of these terms or your use of Roommates will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Los Angeles County, California, and both of us consent to those courts' jurisdiction.
Nothing here takes away a right you can't waive under the law where you live — including the right to bring a claim in your local small-claims court.
You can stop using Roommates at any time by leaving your house or deleting your account — in House settings under Account, or, if you haven't joined a house yet, from the house-picker and waiting-for-approval screens. Deleting your account is never blocked: if you own a house that still has roommates in it, ownership passes to the roommate who has been there longest. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what deletion removes.
We may suspend or end access for accounts that violate these terms.
We may update these terms. We'll change the effective date above and, for significant changes, note it in the app before they take effect. Continuing to use Roommates after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Changes to how we handle your personal information are the exception: those are governed by Section 7 of the Privacy Policy, which sets its own notice and opt-out terms rather than treating continued use as acceptance.
These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about Roommates, and they replace anything said or written before.
If any part of them is found unenforceable, that part is limited or removed only as far as necessary and the rest stays in force. If we don't enforce something right away, we haven't waived it.
You may not transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else. We may transfer ours to a successor if the app changes hands, and we'll say so in the app if that happens.
